This beautiful and symbolically rich piece is a lunula (lunnitsa) combined with a solar cross, a pairing that carries deep meaning in Slavic pagan tradition. It is in an style typical of the Eastern Slavs in the 11th and 12th centuries of the Turov region of what is now Ukraine and Belarus. The Lunulla evokes the energy of the Moon and the Divine Feminine in the presence of such goddesses as Mokoš, Živa, and Devana. Charms of this shape were believed to guard the wearer from the “evil eye,” misfortune, and harmful spirits and to drawn the energy of fertility. The solar cross symbolizes the four directions, the cycle of the year, the turning of the world-wheel with the sun in the center for light, warmth and vitality. It calls for the the energy of the gods Svarog / Dazhbog.
